Since the inception of Zenzeleni the importance of policy to the achievement of our strategic objectives has been paramount. It has been clear from the outset that the operationalisation of a sustainable community networks model could only be realised within an enabling policy environment. It is critical that the policy environment is supportive of alternative and innovative solutions, such that marginalised and under-serviced communities are able to provide affordable telecommunications services for themselves.
In this regard we actively partner with organisations to participate in policy advocacy in South Africa, in Africa and internationally. Over the years we have made several presentations to the parliament portfolio committee on communications in South Africa; ECA Amendment Bill workshop; at the African Union Commission; the World Economic Forum’s World Summit on Information Society and the United Nations Internet Governance Forum.
